Limassol Omodes
We will begin our tour in Limassol, the island's second largest city, the island's main port, the centre of the wine industry and a lively holiday resort. Limassol was built between two ancient city kingdoms: Amathus in the east and Kourion in the west. Driving along the tourist area towards the center of the Old Town of Limassol, we will notice recently refurbished areas, especially around the Limassol Castle. We will have the opportunity to return to the atmosphere of the city in the Middle Ages, walking through the narrow streets.
Our next stop, Kolossi Castle, is located in the town of Kolossi, 11 kilometers west of Limassol. It was built in the 15th century on the ruins of a former fortress from the early 13th century. The castle belonged to the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem and was the seat of the most important of them commanders. For several years in the fourteenth century, it came under the control of the Knights Templar.
Along the way through the Troodos Mountains, we will learn one of the highlights of this trip, the beautiful traditional village of Omodos. The village is built around the monastery of the Holy Cross, one of the oldest and the holiest monasteries on the island. Holy Cross Monastery was founded by Saint Eleni. According to the tradition of St. Eleni left a piece of the Holy rope here, that is, the rope that Jesus Christ was attached to the cross.
Omodos is also a famous wine-producing village with lots of small shops where you can taste and buy the best local Cypriot products and handmade wine. You will have time to relax, eat an optional lunch and admire the beautiful scenery.
